Libya accuses unnamed international forces for working against elections

Libya’s envoy to the UN, Taher El-Sonni, has blamed several unidentified international forces for plotting against elections in North African country adding that the stability of the country is not their concern.
“There are certain international forces who fear the idea of ​​elections in Libya because their results are not guaranteed, which may not serve their narrow interests,” El Sonni told the UN Security Council on Monday evening.

The oil-rich country has slid into chaos since 2011 after then leader Muammar Gaddafi who ruled for decades, was ousted and assassinated during a NATO-backed revolution.
Various warring sides have been vying for power with the support of foreign countries. The currently has two rival administration respectively based in Tripoli and Sirte.
UN-backed highly expected elections slated for Dec. 24 last year supposed to endow the country a central leader, failed to take place over multiple disputes.
El-Sonni, al Wasat notes, added that resolving the Libyan crisis requires restoring ownership and leadership to the political process for Libyans and enabling the people to renew the legitimacy of national institutions through elections.
He also reiterated the need for international and regional powers to lift their hand from Libya and not to interfere in the country’s internal affairs in order to achieve a minimum level of national consensus.
