Ex-Tunisian leader Moncef Marzouki handed four-year prison sentence for treason

A court in Tunisia sentenced former President Moncef Marzouki to four years in prison in absentia for working against the interests of the North African country.
Marzouki, who has been outside the country for several months, has been subject to an arrest warrant issued against him in early November following his indictment for treason, on the back on article 23 of the penal code.
Incumbent President Kais Saied ordered a legal action to be taken against the former leader and his diplomatic passport to be seized after he accused him of treason following Marzouki’s confession that he contributed to postponing the Francophonie Summit scheduled to take place last month on Djerba Island.
Marzouki has been an outspoken critics of Saied following his July 25 move during which he seized the executive and judiciary power suspended the parliament.
The ex-leader lambasted Saied for being a political debutant and indicated that lacks ability to rule the North African country adding that the July 25 move rolled backed the democratic gains made following the 2011 revolution.
