Tunisia: 17 migrants rescued from stranded boat, two bodies recovered

Seventeen Tunisian would-be migrants have been rescued from a stranded vessel in the Northern Region’s maritime waters and two bodies were recovered, the National Guard announced.

The boat, which broke down at sea, had been carrying 19 individuals attempting an illegal crossing of the Mediterranean.

Tragically, the body of one adult and a 5-year-old child were recovered. The child’s remains were found on Monday morning after search efforts by the Maritime Guard of the Northern Region and the Navy.

The rescued migrants received immediate first aid on-site. Seven individuals requiring further care were transferred to hospitals for treatment.

In addition to the rescue operation, the authorities arrested four individuals suspected of facilitating and organizing the illegal migration attempt.

This incident highlights the continued challenges faced by Tunisia and other Mediterranean nations in addressing irregular migration, as well as the human cost of such dangerous ventures.
