The European Parliament hosts for the first time a debate on the right of the Kabyle people to independence from Algerian colonialism. This high-profile political event shows the momentum that is building around the Kabylia cause on the international scene. It also deals a hard blow to the Algerian regime.
The debate, scheduled for this Wednesday, is organized by Member of European Parliament Nicolas Bay, Vice-Chair of European Conservatives and Reformists Group.
The list of guest speakers includes militant Azwaw at Qasi, President of Kabyle League for Human Rights, historian & researcher Charlotte Touati and Yann Baly, President of Christian Solidarity Association. The presentations and debate will focus on the Kabyle struggle and sufferings endured by minorities under Algerian dictatorship.
The EU Parliament debate comes few weeks after the support expressed by the Canadian Parliament to the right of Kabylia people to independence.
Kabylia proclaimed independence from Algeria on December 14, 2025, in Paris. The announcement was made by Kabyle Independence Movement (MAK) before a large audience including MPs and activists from France, Canada, Israel, the United Kingdom and beyond.
Kabylia has historically constituted autonomous political entities before the Ottoman and then French conquests. For decades, the nearly 10 million strong Kabyle people have protested against discrimination and economic marginalization by the central Algerian state.
The Kabylia unilateral proclamation of its Independence marks a seismic shift in MAK struggle, evolving from identity advocacy to an openly independence focused strategy.
