Volkswagen Group Africa delivers strong export growth in 2024, eyes expansion plans in 2025
Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) is celebrating a significant achievement in 2024, setting a new export record with 131,485 vehicles shipped, marking a 21% increase over the previous record of 108,422 vehicles in 2019.
This milestone highlights the company’s strengthened global presence, with its plant in Kariega, South Africa, being the sole exporter of Polo models to Europe and Asia Pacific. The Polo accounted for 88% of the total vehicles exported, continuing its success in both international markets and locally, where it secured the fourth position in the passenger car segment. At the same time, VWGA is expanding its portfolio in South Africa by taking over local retail operations of the Ducati brand, further diversifying its offerings, which include Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
In another major development, Volkswagen is preparing to launch an e-tractor manufacturing plant in Nigeria as part of its effort to modernize agriculture in the country. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts by Nigeria and Germany to enhance their economic and industrial relations, focusing on economic partnerships, regional security, and cultural collaboration. The production of e-tractors is aimed at revolutionizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector by boosting productivity and sustainability, although concerns regarding the country’s power infrastructure may pose challenges to the initiative’s success. Volkswagen Group Africa’s 2024 performance demonstrates its ambition to grow in both the automotive and agricultural sectors across Africa, marking a strong year of milestones and future projects.
