UNHRC: 36 Countries Reaffirm Support to Morocco’s Sovereignty Over its Sahara, a Slap in the face of Algerian Regime
The ruling Algerian junta has suffered another diplomatic setback after 36 countries have expressed in Geneva their firm support to Morocco’s autonomy plan offered for the Sahara under its sovereignty, saying the opening by several countries of consulates in the cities of Dakhla and Laayoune is a clear recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara.
In a joint statement read out during the ongoing 53rd session of HRC by the Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to UN, these countries said the “serious and credible” autonomy plan proposed by the North African Kingdom offers a realistic political solution to the Sahara regional conflict.
They also reaffirmed their support for the efforts made by UN Sahara envoy Staffan De Mistura to advance UN-led political process aimed at achieving a pragmatic and lasting political settlement based on compromise, the Geneva round-table format and Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2602.
The joint statement hailed Morocco’s constructive and voluntary cooperation with the UN Human rights system, in particular the Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), for the promotion and respect of human rights throughout its territory, contrary to Algeria which continues to refuse to allow the UN refugee agency access to the Polisario-controlled Tindouf camps to conduct a census of the people held in these camps in lamentable living conditions.
