EU foreign policy Chief Kaja Kallas has reaffirmed in Rabat the position of the European Union on the Moroccan Sahara, a position aligned with the latest UN Security Council Resolution 2797 endorsing Autonomy plan under the Kingdom’s Sovereignty.
During a meeting held Thursday with Moroccan foreign minister Nasser Bourita, Mrs. Kallas also reiterated EU’s call urging all parties to the Sahara conflict “to engage in discussions without preconditions, taking as basis the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco with a view to reaching a definitive political solution”
In a joint statement, the EU hailed UNSC 2797 which expresses full support for UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and conducting negotiations on Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable resolution of the dispute.
The European bloc recognises that “a genuine autonomy could represent a most feasible outcome” and lauds Morocco’s willingness to engage in good faith with all parties concerned in order to clarify the arrangements under this autonomy plan and explain what shape autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty would take.
The support expressed by the EU to Morocco’s Autonomy plan comes ahead of the two meetings planned by the UN Security Council on the Sahara by end of this month. According to press report, the Council is expected to take pivotal decisions on the MINURSO paving for the way for closing for the Sahara issue.
