Libya Accelerates Migrant Repatriations as Interior Ministry Tightens Border Governance

Libya’s Interior Ministry confirmed, on January 1, the deportation of a group of Bangladeshi nationals through Mitiga International Airport, advancing its national program to repatriate individuals residing in the country without legal status. The ministry said the operation followed the completion of legal procedures and close coordination with relevant authorities.

Officials framed the initiative as part of a broader, multi-layered strategy to stem irregular migration, strengthen border control, and reinforce domestic security and stability. The approach blends law enforcement, tighter regulation of foreign residents, and structured cooperation with migrants’ countries of origin.

As Libya continues to serve as a principal transit corridor for migrants seeking passage to Europe, migration management remains a defining and persistent policy challenge, shaping the state’s security calculus and regional engagement.
