Tree Moroccan Banks Win African Banker Awards 2017

Attijariwafa Bank, la Caisse Centrale de Garantie and le Groupe Crédit Agricole du Maroc have all won 2017 African Banker Awards in various categories.
Attijariwafa Bank has been awarded the trophy of “Best Regional Bank in North Africa”, la Caisse Centrale de Garantie has obtained the “Financial Inclusion Award”, while le Groupe Crédit Agricole du Maroc has gained the title of “Socially Responsible Bank of the Year”
These awards were handed over to the winners at a ceremony during the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) held in Ahmedabad, India, on May 23.
The African Bankers awards include several prizes for the best retail bank in Africa, the best investment bank, the best banking innovation, Deal of the Year (Debt/Equity/Infrastructure).
Five other categories including individual recognitions are chosen by multilateral agencies, international experts and the editorial board of African Banker.
These categories are Best Regional Banks in Africa (North/East/Southern/Central/West), Finance Minister of the Year, Central Bank Governor of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, and African Banker Icon.
The President of Afreximbank, Dr Benedict Oramah has been named Banker of the Year. Nigerian bank, GT Bank beat off competition from five shortlisted nominees to win the coveted ‘African Bank of the Year Award’.
The “Lifetime Achievement Award” was presented to an institution for the first time, as opposed to an individual. This is recognition to the outstanding contribution to African banking that Citi as an organization has done since it has started operating in Africa and in shaping some of Africa’s leading bankers, many of them having led the growing number of African financial institutions across the continent.
Waheed A. Olagunju, the acting CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Industry was honored with this year’s African Banker Icon award, which recognizes a banking career that spans over two decades.
Senegal’s Amadou Ba won the Finance Minister of the year award. He has managed to successfully steer the Senegalese economy which is today one of the best performing in Africa.
The ‘African Central Bank Governor of the Year’ accolade was awarded to Mauritius’ Rameswurlall Basant Roi. Mauritius today is one of Africa’s leading financial capitals and this is largely the work of the Governor. Its financial services sector is one of the strongest in Africa and it has thriving capital markets.
