JSW Steel Italy Piombino (Italy), Saarstahl Rails SAS (Germany), Jindal Steel (India), and China Railway Material Group are competing for a contract to supply tracks for the Kenitra–Marrakech high-speed rail line and conventional line upgrades, according to local press reports.
Last year, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI launched a $10 billion rail expansion plan, including the construction of a high-speed line by 2030 to Marrakesh, the country’s main tourist hub.
The country’s preparations to co-host the World Cup in 2030, together with Spain and Portugal have prompted the extension of the high-speed, intercity and urban rail networks.
The new high-speed line, worth $5.7 billion will start from Kenitra on the Atlantic coast and run 430 kilometers (267 miles) south to Marrakesh, serving Rabat and Casablanca along the way.
