UN Sahara envoy Staffan de Mistura has met with U.S. Senior Presidential Advisor Massad Boulos following the visit paid lately by the UN envoy to Tindouf Camps and his talks with Polisario leaders to advance the political process for the resolution of the Sahara regional conflict.
On this occasion, the Trump administration has stressed again the need to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2797 which endorsed the Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty, sending a strong message to the Polisario and Algeria, both reluctant to abide by the Security Council decision.
In a comment posted on his X account, Mr. Boulos said he discussed with de Mistura “strategies to further the implementation of UNSCR 2797, specifically ways to assist the parties in achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.”
“The Sahara dispute has dragged on for more than 50 years, and as UNSCR 2797 underscored”, he added, saying “the parties should urgently realize a resolution”.
The Sahara resolution 2797, adopted end of October 2025, calls upon the four parties to the Sahara conflict (Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Polisario), to engage in discussions without preconditions, taking as basis Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal for reaching a realistic political solution ending the five-decade conflict.
UNSC Resolution 2797 sets the framework of talks between the four parties to the conflict. It represents a historic turning point in the Sahara issue. For the first time, the Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty is seen as the sole basis for negotiating a feasible political solution marked by the seal of compromise, ruling out the referendum option and putting an end to the ambiguities that have dogged the issue for decades.
