Migrant Boat Tragedy: Two Bodies Recovered off Eastern Libya

The Libyan Red Crescent has recovered two bodies following the capsizing of a migrant boat off eastern Libya.

In a statement issued on Sunday, 1 March 2026, the organisation confirmed that the vessel overturned in the area between Al-Tamimi and Umm Al-Razm, near Derna. Emergency teams from the Umm Al-Razm branch, supported by colleagues from Derna, conducted recovery operations at the scene.

The two bodies retrieved were transferred to the relevant authorities to complete legal procedures. The Red Crescent did not disclose the total number of casualties or survivors.

It only said that the Migration Team of the Derna branch visited a shelter centre operated by the Anti-Illegal Migration Authority in the Martouba area to check on survivors’ conditions.

Last Monday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 53 migrants, including two infants, had died or gone missing after a separate boat capsized off the Libyan coast. According to the agency, the vessel departed from Al-Zawiya on the evening of 5 February and overturned roughly six hours later after water leaked into the boat.

The latest incident underscores the persistent dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous crossings along the central Mediterranean route.
