Libyan political parties call for unity, action to resolve stalemate

Thirty representatives from various Libyan political parties have expressed deep concerns over the ongoing political deadlock in the country during an introductory meeting with Hanna S. Tetteh, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya.

The representatives underscored the urgent need to unify state institutions, accelerate the political process, and better manage resources, as reported by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

During the meeting, participants questioned the work of the Advisory Committee and called on UNSMIL to ensure that all political actors have a voice in future political processes. They warned against the risks of further delays and advocated a comprehensive strategy to hold elections in the near future.

In response, Mrs. Tetteh reiterated the inclusive nature of the UN approach, and emphasized the importance of national consensus, urging political parties to act as positive agents of change at every level, including within their communities.

Tetteh also highlighted the critical role of political parties and community leaders in reducing the potential for violence and fostering stability. She stressed that elections would serve as a crucial milestone in securing long-term peace and democracy in Libya. She proposed continued follow-up discussions with political parties to deepen dialogue and find common ground, while seeking recommendations to ensure sustained efforts towards peace, stability, and the successful holding of elections.
