Morocco has reaffirmed unwavering commitment to the UN-led political process engaged to find a lasting and peaceful resolution to the Sahara regional conflict.
Rabat’s firm stand was expressed by Speaker of the House of Councillors, Mohamed Ould Errachid, during the 150th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly (IPU), convened in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, April 5-9.
“Certain parties have developed the habit of exploiting international fora to raise the issue of the Moroccan Sahara outside the framework of the United Nations and the UN process, which remain the only legitimate framework to address this artificial regional dispute,” said Ould Errachid in response to the Algerian disruptive attempts and deceptive propaganda on the Sahara.
The IPU Assembly must remain a platform for the exchange of viewpoints and coordination of parliamentary efforts on issues of common interest serving regional and international stability and peace, added Ould Errachid, making reference to the attempts of the Algerian delegation to steer the debate to its destabilizing separatist agenda instead of focusing on IPU’s initiatives seeking to enhance understanding between peoples of the world and promoting sustainable development.
On the sidelines of the Tashkent IPU Assembly, MPs from non-aligned countries adopted a joint Declaration reiterating “unwavering commitment” to the respect of sovereignty & territorial integrity of countries, peaceful coexistence, and non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs, all principles upheld by Morocco.
