Morocco tops African destinations with 17.4 million tourists in 2024
Morocco has become Africa’s top tourist destination with new record arrivals of 17.4 million tourists in 2024, the tourism ministry said.
Arrivals were two years ahead of schedule or 20% higher compared with 2023, showing the country has turned the Covid-19 page thanks to major investments in its hospitality sector.
Of all visitors, 51% were foreigners and 49% were Moroccans residing abroad, the ministry said in a statement.
“This exceptional performance is the result of targeted investments by our government in this vital sector for our country’s economy, as well as the constant mobilization of industry professionals,” tourism minister Fatima Zahfra Ammor said.
Morocco aspires to join the list of the world’s top 15 tourist destinations.
With tourism revenue at 104 billion dirhams in the first eleven months this year, the sector should be able to generate revenue worth 120 billion dirhams in hard currency.
