Burkina Faso’s Coup that Wasn’t: Government claims victory over shadowy plot

Burkina Faso’s government just dropped a bombshell, claiming they have foiled a massive plot to destabilize the country. It’s like something out of a spy thriller, complete with foreign conspirators, elaborate plans, and a dash of international intrigue.

Security Minister Mahamadou Sana took to the airwaves to spill the beans. The cast of villains? A motley crew of 14 named individuals, including junta opponents, ex-ministers, and even a couple of journalists. In addition, the mysterious “Western intelligence officials” lurking in the shadows.

According to Mahamadou Sana, this was not just some half-baked scheme. It is a three-phase master plan, with armed groups trained and paid to wreak havoc. Phase one? That deadly jihadi attack last month that left 100 dead. The sequel was supposed to target the presidential palace, a drone base, and an airport. For the grand finale, they planned attacks near the border of Côte d’Ivoire.

The plot allegedly roped in civil society bigwigs and economic operators. It is like they were trying to hit every sector of society.

The government is not messing around, launching a special anti-terrorist operation and warning that they are done playing nice. They are even calling on families to rat out their plotting relatives.
As Burkina Faso tries to sell this tale of narrowly avoided chaos, one question remains: Is this a genuine threat neutralized, or a convenient narrative to tighten control?
