Libya: Italian ENI starts exploratory drilling in Ghadames Basin

Italian oil company Eni announced on September 24 that it will begin onshore exploratory drilling in Libya’s Ghadames Basin next month, with plans to launch an offshore drilling campaign in the Sirte Basin by the end of 2025.

Speaking at the Libyan-Italian roundtable in Rome, Martina Obizzi, President of the North Africa and Levant region at Eni, emphasized the importance of exploration activities in the energy sector. “Exploration is a key pillar of the energy sector,” Obizzi said, according to Energy Capital & Power. “We have maintained our focus on Libya from an exploration standpoint and are eager to resume these activities as soon as possible,” she added, highlighting that Libya holds over a billion undiscovered resources.

Eni is collaborating with British Petroleum and the Libyan Investment Authority to operate offshore exploration in Areas A and B of the Ghadames Basin.

The Libyan-Italian roundtable is also set to discuss the role of Italian companies in developing Libya’s oil and natural gas sector, as well as the upcoming third edition of the Libya Energy and Economy Summit, scheduled for next year in Tripoli.
