Russia invites Tunisia’s top diplomat Nabil Ammar to Moscow to bolster ties

Nabil Ammar, Tunisia’s Foreign Minister, is expected in Moscow on September 26 at the invitation of his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, in a bid to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Webdo Tunis reports, citing the Foreign ministry.
“The visit will provide an opportunity to support African efforts to bring an end to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict within the framework of the African Peace Initiative, as well as UN efforts to revive the Black Sea Grain Export Agreement,” the ministry added.
Tunisia in February 2022 voted in a favor of a UN resolution condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine. The country was among 141 countries that endorsed the resolution asking Russia to end its invasion of its western-backed neighbor.
Some analysts believed Tunisia’s vote was motivated by the negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), at a time when the country can hardly make ends meet.
In addition, the U.S. has Tunisia in its sights back then. Washington appealed to Tunisian President Kais Saied to lead a “transparent and inclusive” reform process, Orient XXI reports.
Talks with the IMF have so far stalled, with President Kais Saied refusing to abide by conditions set by the Washington-based lender.
