Algeria withdraws bid to host African cup of nations 2025 and 2027

Algeria has spared itself another international embarrassment by proactively withdrawing its bid to host the African cup of nation for 2025 and 2027.

Thirsty for whatever international recognition, Algeria has reaped a fiasco after another with the most painful blow coming from the BRICS grouping that denied the country a membership that was arrogantly promised by the Algerian presidency.

Backpedaling on hosting the African cup of nations was announced by Algerian regime mouthpiece and sports commentator Hafid Deradji who sugarcoated the decision with the need to restore order in Algeria’s football management.

Algeria has failed to make it to the Qatar world cup nor to the Paris Olympic games in 2024.

Unrelenting in using sports for the indoctrination and the distraction of its impoverished people, the Algerian regime has suffered a humiliating setback at the Confederation of African football (CAF) in July, after its representative failed to win a seat at the Executive Committee of the African football governing body.

During CAF’s General Assembly convening in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the majority of CAF administrators voted for the delegate of Libya as representative for North Africa at the executive committee, crushing the Algerian candidate.

Few months after the inauguration of what seemed to be state-of-the art stadiums commissioned by the outgoing president Bouteflika, Algeria under the leadership of the military-civilian duo CHengriha and Tebboune is unable to maintain proper pitches. Its national team opted for Tunisia after national squad coach Djamel Belmadi said there was no pitch in Algeria that meets standards for training!

Besides lacking hotel infrastructure and its rampant racism against sub-Saharan nationals, Algeria remains largely unprepared to host continental events.

The decision-making body of the African football confederation is also aware of the flight ban Algeria imposes on an African football powerhouse such as Morocco. Earlier this year, Moroccan local players taking part at the Chan championship for local players made a forced withdrawal after Algerians insisted on their direct flight ban on Moroccan aircrafts.

By doing so, Algeria- under military rule and a civilian façade- shows that it is not prepared ethically to host international championships as it continues to use sports in a desperate attempt to achieve its anti-Morocco agenda.

Last year, Algeria’s military junta planned to use the Mediterranean games to polish the image of a country beset by authoritarianism, poverty and instability. But its hopes were crushed, as the country accumulated rebukes for its organization fiasco.

Algeria showed that its hostility to Morocco has in fact spilled over to sports as it banned Moroccan journalists from covering the event, cut Moroccan anthem and mistreated Moroccan athletes.

The International Committee of Mediterranean Games decried the political use of the sports event to polish a decaying regime.

“Mediterranean games were not showcased, and some countries were erased from the map of the Mediterranean sea,” said the committee in a rebuke over the opening ceremony which was rather focused on Algeria only.

“Transportation was a total fiasco,” said the committee, noting that many guests were left waiting for hours.

These dysfunctions are “unacceptable and unprecedented,” the committee said, adding that these organizational shortfalls added to the lack of drinking water and medical support.

Not to mention when Moroccan underage footballers were attacked by adult fans on the pitch in a final game in Algeria, revealing Algiers’incapacity to offer security to athletes.
