Niger gives Mali, Burkina Faso permit to intervene in event of ECOWAS military operation

Niger, led by a junta, Thursday August 24 indicated that Mali and Burkina Faso can intervene military on its soil should the country be confronted by any aggression in the backdrop of a possible military action by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to restore deposed leader Mohamed Bazoum.
Oumarou Ibrahim Sidi, the deputy Secretary General of the Foreign ministry made the announcement in the presence of Mali and Burkina Faso’s top diplomats, in the capital of Niger.
Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, a former commander of the presidential guard, made himself the new leader of the West African country after he removed elected leader Bazoum on July 26.
The ECOWAS and several countries around the world condemned the coup and demanded the restoration of Bazoum but the junta led by Tchiani.
Burkina Faso and Mali however stepped forth and provided support for the coup and vowed to side with Niger if the regional bloc goes ahead with a military action. ECOWAS army commanders met last week in Accra, Ghana, to carve out a plan but stopped short to provide details.
Tchiani Saturday announced a three-year transition plan, closing the possibility for Bazoum to return to power.
