Sahara: UN Envoy Staffan de Mistura expected Saturday in Rabat on new tour to region

UN Sahara envoy Staffan de Mistura will start a new tour to the region with a visit to Morocco this Saturday for talks with Moroccan officials to advance the UN-led political process on the Sahara.

The announcement was made Friday by Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General during his daily press briefing.

“I have an update on the travels of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for (…) Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, who is planning to conduct a new phase of visits to all concerned interlocutors in the region in the coming days”, said the Spokesperson.

“The UN envoy will travel to Rabat tomorrow to meet Moroccan officials. It is also his intention to visit Sahara in the course of this trip”, said Mr. Dujarric, stressing that “during this phase of the engagement, the Personal Envoy intends to remain guided by the clear precedents set by his predecessors”.

“Following the Personal Envoy’s regional tour in January, he looks forward to deepening the consultations he initiated at that time with all parties concerned on the perspectives to constructively advance the political process on Sahara”, added the Spokesman for the UN Secretary General.
