Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur wins Madrid Open title, her greatest feast of all times

The Tunisian tennis woman Ons Jabeur made history Sunday as she lifted the Madrid Open title, her greatest victory so far in history, after she defeated US opponent Jessica Pegula.

It took 2 hours for the 27-year old woman to overcome Pegula by score of 7-5, 0-6, 6-2.

With this win, Ons Jabeur becomes the first African player to win a WTA 1000 tournament and leaped to No. 7 in the world ranking.

The Tunisia woman took 56 mn to get first set and lost the second to her American opponent who showed skills and resilience for the comeback.

Both players moved to the third set with exchange of breaks early in set three, but Jabeur was the first to convert a precious hold, before coming through a decisive seventh game to claim a double-break and lead 5-2.

Jabeur finally made the decisive move as she held her nerve and achieved an historic victory.

“After, I was like, ‘No matter what you do, just don’t lose your serve,” the Tunisian woman said at a press conference after her victory.

“It was tricky moments there. I felt like even my body language was much better the third set. I was trying to go more forward and be able to back her shots, because she was really playing good.”

The Madrid open title scores Jabeur’s rise as a global top tennis player. Last year she won her first major title in Birmingham.
