Delays pile up for Oran 2022, ICMG worried
The next edition of the Mediterranean Games, scheduled for 25 June to 5 July 2022 in Oran, Algeria, is at stake because of delays in preparations.
In a scathing report, the Executive Committee of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games expressed concerns about the piling delays recorded by the city of Oran, which is to host the 2022 Mediterranean Games.
The president of the coordination commission of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG), the Frenchman Bernard Amsalem, is worried about the delays in the preparation of the multi-sport event, reported the news outlet francsjeux.com.
Bernard Amsalem expressed this concern at a recent meeting of the executive committee of the ICMG.
He said the delays experienced by the local organizing committee are particularly worrying in the areas of transport, technology and competition sites. To make matters worse, communication seems to be very difficult with the Algerian organizers.
As everything is still far from being ready only seven months before the opening of the Mediterranean Games, the ICMG committee sent an official letter to the highest Algerian authorities, including the Head of State, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Sports and Youth, as well as to the members of the Algerian National Olympic Committee.
The letter requires them “to provide immediate solutions to the problems that have arisen, concerning the preparations pace.”
The ICMG has formally requested to meet with the political authorities, in order to clarify all the issues related to the organization of the event.
The ICMG calls for more collaboration with the organizing committee and the Algerian authorities.
A teleconference between the coordination commission and the organizing committee is scheduled for November 30, according to francsjeux.com, which announced that the meeting will be followed by an inspection visit to Algeria, between Dec. 10 and 12.
The Oran Mediterranean Games were initially planned for this year, but were postponed to 2022 due to the health crisis.
