Tunisia: Military court sentences runway suspended lawmaker to three years in prison
Tunisia’s military court handed Wednesday a three-year prison sentence to Maher Zid, a lawmaker in the suspended state legislature.
Zid, who is uncounted for, was sued by former defense minister Ghazi Jribi after he accused him of corruption in relation to the acquisition of a number of US helicopters for the Tunisian armed forces.
Zid early this month was also handed four years in prison in a different case involving the theft of official documents and minutes during his spell at a local court in Tunis.
President Kais Saied has closed the parliament and suspended the immunity of lawmakers to allow the judiciary to hunt down those targeted by investigations but protected by their immunity.
Since the suspension of the parliament on July 25, several lawmakers have been arrested and subjected to probes.
