The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, that it had helped 535 migrants voluntarily return from Libya to their countries of origin during the week, with support from the European Union.
The returnees included 180 migrants from Chad, 102 from Guinea, 79 from The Gambia and 174 from Bangladesh. Under its Voluntary Humanitarian Return programme, the IOM supports migrants to travel home safely and with dignity.
Libya remains a major transit route for irregular migrants attempting to reach Europe across the Mediterranean Sea.
