A delegation from the American mission to Morocco has travelled lately to El Guergarate border post, located between Morocco and Mauritania. The visit sends a strong U.S. message to the Algerian regime and its Polisario militias, warning them against any attempt to undermine the Kingdom’s security and stability.
In a press release, the U.S. embassy said the trip to the Southernmost tip of Moroccan Sahara underscores “our shared commitment to regional security and stronger bilateral cooperation.”
During their visit, members of the American delegation, composed of diplomats, economic advisor and military security officer, discussed with local Moroccan officials ways of strengthening further cooperation on border security, combat human and narcotics trafficking, as well as interagency coordination in the Moroccan Sahara.
El Guergarate, border post is so far the only land crossing connecting Morocco to Mauritania and the rest of West Africa. It is vitally important as a major trans-Saharan trade corridor. It is also a critical artery for trade between Europe, the Maghreb, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Hundreds of truck-trailers cross daily El-Guergarate border port, carrying Moroccan fresh fruits, vegetables, and manufactured goods to Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, and beyond.
El Guergarate is growing into a strategic commercial hub in Africa. The Polisario militants have tried to disrupt trade flow between Morocco and West Africa but they failed.
