Sahara: De Mistura Travels this weekend to Tindouf Camps to Deliver Last Warning Message to Separatist Group

UN Sahara Envoy Staffan de Mistura is expected this weekend to visit Tindouf Camps to deliver to the leaders of the separatist group a last warning message to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2797 endorsing Autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty.

This visit comes after the terrorist rocket attacks launched by the Polisario militants against Moroccan Saharan city of Samara. These attacks were condemned by the UN, MINURSO and the international community saying the aggression threatens regional stability and progress towards peace and that the 50-year-old Sahara conflict cannot continue and must end now.

The visit of de Mistura to Tindouf Camps is part of the efforts to launch a new round of quadripartite negotiations after those hosted by Madrid and Washington on the Sahara in line with UNSC resolution 2797.

The historic Sahara resolution 2797, adopted end of October 2025, calls upon the four parties to the Sahara conflict (Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Polisario), to engage in discussions without preconditions, taking as basis Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal, with a view to achieving a final and mutually acceptable political solution.

During its April meetings, Security Council members received closed-doors briefings by Head of MINURSO Alexander Ivanko and Staffan de Mistura on the progress of the UN-led political process based on resolution 2797. The Council also reviewed the performance of the UN Sahara mission amid Trump’s new policy of eliminating failed UN peacekeeping missions to streamline bureaucracy, reduce costs and restore accountability.

According to press reports, Staffan de Mistura had told the Security Council during its April meeting that “There is real momentum now and a genuine chance to resolve this long-running conflict”. He also called on the Polisario to make concessions to reach a mutually acceptable solution in line with UNSC decision.
