Morocco climbs to record 7th in FIFA rankings ahead of 2026 World Cup

Morocco climbed to a record seventh place in FIFA’s world rankings, cementing its status as Africa’s top-ranked national team.

The Atlas Lions moved up one spot, marking the highest position in the country’s history.

The rise was aided by the Netherlands slipping to eighth after a 1-0 home defeat in a friendly game.

Morocco remains firmly at the top of the African rankings, ahead of Senegal in 14th place, Nigeria in 26th, Algeria in 28th and Egypt in 29th.

The ranking boost comes as Morocco fine-tunes preparations for the 2026 World Cup. The team, coached by Mohamed Ouahbi, is set to play a final warm-up match against Norway, led by striker Erling Haaland, on June 7 at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey.

Drawn in Group C for the tournament, Morocco will open its campaign against Brazil on June 13 in New Jersey. The squad, led by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, will then face Scotland on June 19 in Boston before concluding the group stage against Haiti on June 24 in Atlanta.
