Morocco, UK set sight on doubling trade

Morocco and the United Kingdom are aiming to double the volume of their bilateral trade from 4.5 billion pounds currently, officials said, as both countries move to deepen economic cooperation and boost bilateral investment.

The goal was stated during the 4th session of the Morocco-UK Association Council held in Rabat, under the co-chairmanship of Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour and UK Minister of State for International Trade Chris Bryant.

According to Mezzour, both sides reviewed progress achieved over the past year and discussed ways to overcome obstacles hindering trade, particularly technical constraints related to standards and access to respective markets, in order to “further streamline trade flows,” he said.

The minister also highlighted growing British interest in Morocco, stressing that Rabat is committed to supporting UK firms seeking to invest and integrate into the national economy.

For his part, Bryant welcomed the strength of bilateral relations and described Morocco’s current trajectory as an “exceptional moment of opportunity,” he said.

He added that Morocco is increasingly asserting itself as bridge linking Europe and Africa, while the United Kingdom positions itself as a global partner capable of connecting Moroccan businesses to international markets.

Bryant noted that the expansion of bilateral trade will go beyond agriculture and manufacturing to include services such as finance, architecture, marketing and creative industries, while also pointing to opportunities for cooperation in the aerospace sector.

The two sides also highlighted Morocco’s preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup as a key driver of stronger economic ties.

Mezzour described the tournament as “a driver of development,” saying it will accelerate improvements in transport, healthcare and public infrastructure across the country.

Bryant, for his part, emphasized that the event represents a major opportunity for cooperation, with British companies ready to contribute expertise in infrastructure, security, event management and legacy planning.

He reiterated the UK’s willingness to support Morocco in delivering a successful World Cup, while strengthening long-term economic partnership.

On the same occasion, the UK trade envoy for Morocco and West Africa Ben Coleman said aligning priorities between both sides remains key, noting that British companies are seeking to better understand Morocco’s development needs, while Rabat is looking to tap into UK expertise.

Tourism also remains a strong pillar of bilateral relations, with Morocco attracting around 1.5 million British visitors annually.
