Morocco elected to IPU’s democracy & human rights committee

Morocco was elected Tuesday to the Bureau of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, one of the organization’s four main bodies

Morocco was elected during the 150th IPU Assembly held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, April 4-9, in the person of Kamal Ait Mik, a member of the upper house of the Moroccan parliament.

He was unanimously chosen to represent the Arab geopolitical group on the committee.

His election was seen as recognition of his ongoing contributions to the IPU’s work on democracy and human rights, including proposals on youth and women’s political participation, the fight against terrorism, and protection of vulnerable populations.

The Arab group praised Ait Mik’s leadership on issues such as migrant rights, child protection in conflict zones, and efforts to counter hate speech and discrimination.

Ait Mik previously joined the Bureau of the Forum of Young Parliamentarians in 2023 and was appointed rapporteur of the forum during the current session. He will lead the preparation of a report for a draft resolution to be debated at the 151st IPU Assembly, scheduled for October in Geneva.

Morocco’s election reflected its strong international standing in promoting democratic values and human rights.

“Morocco has always been recognized as a country committed to democratic principles and the rule of law,” he commented after the election.

Founded in 1889, the IPU brings together national parliaments from around the world and comprises four standing committees: Peace and International Security; Sustainable Development; Democracy and Human Rights; and United Nations Affairs. It also includes forums for women and young parliamentarians, alongside various governance bodies.
