Canary Islands, Mauritania set up joint Commission to spur economic exchanges

Mauritania and Spain launched Tuesday November 21 in Canary Islands a joint economic commission to establish “relations of trust” between Canary Islands and Mauritanian companies, to develop joint projects in several economic fields, reports say.

The Commission is made of around 25 companies from the Canary Islands and several Mauritanian companies active in trade, fishing, port, marine repair and transport sectors. The Commission is backed by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and the organizations of the four Chambers of commerce of the Canary Islands, and the Mauritanian Chamber of Commerce.

“What we need to do now is for companies on both sides of the Atlantic to build trusting relationships to develop business,” said Luis Padilla, the Director of Relations with Africa in the government of the autonomous territory.

Padilla also indicated 8,000 Mauritanians currently possess a permit for a stay in the islands and about 60,000 Mauritanians transited through them between the month of January and October.
