Sahara: Colombia’s Senators Defy Pdt. Petro by Supporting Morocco’s Territorial Integrity
The overwhelming majority of Colombian senators are standing united against leftist President Gustavo Petro, challenging his decision to restore ties with self-proclaimed separatist entity “SADR”, which is armed, funded and hosted by Algerian junta.
In a joint statement adopted Tuesday, 62 senators, out of 108 members of the Parliament lower house, backed the decision of the former government of Iván Duque which recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire Sahara, describing the North African Kingdom as a long-standing ally and friend.
“For many decades, Colombia has maintained a constructive position, supporting Morocco’s efforts to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution based on the autonomy plan proposed by Rabat in 2007”, said the statement, noting that UN Security Council resolutions and the international community describe the Moroccan initiative as “serious, credible and realistic” solution for the Sahara issue.
The Colombian senators urged President Petro to reverse his hostile decision which undermines the excellent ties of friendship existing with Morocco, a strategic and privileged partner of Bogota in Africa and the Arab world, given its regional and international leadership.
According to latest opinion polls, President Petro’s approval rating dropped to 46% in October from 56% in August, his first two months in office amid growing concerns about the country’s economy, unemployment and rising costs.
Colombian People are upset at how the government is handling the economy, about inflation, and have an overall negative outlook on the country’s direction.
Furthermore, Colombian assets have fallen with the collapse of the country’s currency amid investors’ worries over the agenda of the leftist president.
