Sahara: Algeria campaigning in Africa against Morocco’s territorial integrity

Algerian Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum has failed to get the support for the Polisario separatist group Front during his latest trip to Togo that was part of an intensive lobbying and new plots hatched against Morocco’s territorial integrity.

In his twitter account, the Algerian minister said that he discussed with foreign minister of Togo, Robert Dossi, bilateral cooperation and ways of deepening consultations on current issues in the region, including the situation in Mali, the Sahel, Libya and “Western Sahara”.

But Togo, which supports Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and Moroccan autonomy plan, did not made any comment on the Sahara to the great disappointment of Algeria. Togo’s top diplomat said that the trip of Boukadoum to Lomé is destined to discuss peace in Mali and the Sahel.

Algeria has also been pushing to include the Sahara issue on the agenda of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union meeting this March 9. President Abdelmajid Taboun held telephone talks with President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta and South African president Cyril Ramaphosa in a bid to rally support for the Algerian move which comes after the series of diplomatic gains made by Morocco.

Although the PSC meeting, chaired by Kenya, did not include the Sahara on its agenda, which focuses on peace in Africa and development challenges, the Algerian state TV said the Sahara will be discussed by the AU Council, in a desperate move to cover up Algeria’s diplomatic setbacks.

During the past years, Algeria had exploited its chairmanship of the PSC and hijacked this AU body to support separatism and especially the Polisario instead of addressing the challenging issues the African continent is facing.
