Morocco has denounced in the strongest terms the criminal attacks launched by the Iranian-backed Houthi militias against the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
The condemnation was expressed Thursday in New York by Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita during a UN Security Council Arria-formula meeting held under the theme: “Safe seas, shared security: Protecting freedom of navigation in an evolving security environment.”
Morocco has also expressed absolute solidarity with Saudi Arabia, saying it firmly backs all Saudi measures taken to protect its territory and ensure the safety of its population.
During the meeting, Bourita decried the Houthi attempt to control the Bab al-Mandab Strait, stressing that this aggression “reminds us that the security of international straits is no longer limited to States alone but is now threatened by non-State actors.”
This reality requires the international community to reconsider its approaches, said the official, noting that the Strait of Hormuz crisis has shown that despite the existence of a legal framework, the international community still lacks mechanisms capable of preventing crises or managing them when they occur.
The meeting, attended by members of the Security Council as well as UN member states and international experts, was an opportunity to stress the need for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and finding a swift solution to the crisis in the Strait of Bab al-Mandab.
