Libya’s internationally recognised Government of National Unity announced on Sunday that it had dismantled an organised sabotage cell allegedly responsible for suicide drone attacks on oil and electricity facilities in Tripoli and Zawiya.
Five Libyan and foreign nationals were arrested during an operation conducted by the Ministry of Defense, according to a statement published on the government’s “Hokomitna” platform.
Authorities said the operation also foiled planned attacks on a power station south of Tripoli, other critical facilities and political, security and military leaders.
Investigations are continuing to identify other suspects and those accused of planning, financing or supporting the operations. The government said further details would be released after preliminary investigations were completed. The arrests followed weeks of attacks and sabotage against energy infrastructure in western Libya, which placed additional pressure on electricity supplies and public services during the peak summer period.
