Libya intercepts 741 migrants in one week, IOM reports

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says 741 migrants were returned to Libya between May 10 and 16 after being intercepted at sea, while attempting to cross to Europe. According to the IOM, the migrants were disembarked in several Libyan coastal cities, but details about their nationalities and ages were not disclosed.

The Agency noted that the interceptions underscore continued irregular migration attempts along the Central Mediterranean route, regarded as one of the world’s deadliest migration corridors.

The IOM added that since the beginning of 2026, a total of 6,811 migrants had been intercepted and returned to Libya, while 822 others were reported dead or missing on the route as of May 16.
