Transports at heart of Casablanca’s facelift ahead of 2030 World Cup

Casablanca’s public transport authority, Casa Transport, has issued an international tender to update the city’s Urban Mobility Plan as part of an eight‑month strategic study designed to map out an integrated transport vision through 2030.

The move comes as Morocco’s economic capital prepares for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co‑host with Spain and Portugal, and faces mounting infrastructure demands linked to major projects.

These include the planned Grand Hassan II Stadium in Ben Slimane, with a capacity of 115,000 seats, the development of a Regional Express Rail (RER) network, and the expansion of Mohammed V International Airport into an international hub equipped with high‑speed rail‑type services.

According to a report by daily Al Ahdath Maghrebia, the study will be conducted through seven technical missions based on data from the 2024 population census and advanced digital traffic modelling.

The plan provides for scenarios involving new mass‑transit corridors operating on dedicated routes and integrated with the future RER network, with two priority corridors selected for detailed technical study.

The study also includes unified ticketing systems and the gradual introduction of cleaner energy technologies, such as electric and hydrogen‑powered buses. Managing spectator flows to stadiums during major events will be a key focus, with detailed mobility modelling and emergency traffic plans.

Officials say the goal is to create a lasting transport legacy beyond the World Cup. The project is receiving technical support from the French Development Agency (AFD).
