Libya Raises Maritime Alert as Abandoned Russian LNG Tanker Drifts Towards its Waters

Authorities in Libya have heightened maritime alert levels after a Russian liquefied natural gas tanker, identified as ARCTIC METAGAZ, was spotted drifting uncontrollably towards the country’s territorial waters.

The Ports and Maritime Transport Authority reported on Wednesday, March 18, that the vessel is unmanned and unable to manoeuvre, leaving it vulnerable to prevailing winds and sea currents.

Officials have cautioned nearby ships to maintain a safe distance due to potential hazards, including the risk of explosion, gas leakage, and structural instability.

Offshore installations, including the Bouri and Al-Jurf oil fields, have been placed on high alert, with emergency response vessels on standby should the tanker approach critical infrastructure.

Authorities indicated that the situation is under close surveillance in coordination with international partners, as efforts continue to mitigate potential environmental and security risks.
