Mauritania: Emerging Political Parties Protest Delays in Legal Recognition Process

A group of political parties currently in the process of formation has raised concerns, on 22 December,2025, over prolonged delays in the issuance of final legal documents required to operate officially, despite meeting all legal and administrative requirements under the Law on Political Parties. And its implementing decree.
In a joint declaration, the parties said they had fulfilled all approval conditions, including submitting recommendations and administrative documents, and had received preliminary digital receipts. However, they noted that they have been waiting—some for more than six months—for the delivery of final authorisation, without any formal explanation beyond assurances that their applications remain “under consideration”.
The parties described the delays as an infringement of a fundamental constitutional right and a breach of the principles of fairness, equality and equal opportunity among political actors. They warned that the situation echoed past practices of exclusion and stagnation that previously constrained political life. Calling on the relevant ministry to lift what they termed an “unjustified blockage”, the parties urged authorities to allow them to begin lawful political activities without further delay, in line with regulatory provisions and in the interest of safeguarding the credibility of the country’s pluralist political process.
They reaffirmed their commitment to responsible political engagement within the framework of national laws and reiterated their determination to defend citizens’ rights to organise, form political parties, express themselves and participate in public life. The declaration was signed by the Progressive People’s Party, the Democratic Renewal Party (Tehady), the Urban Planning Party, the National Democratic Youth Rally (Techawor), the Union of Forces of Change (Al-Ittihad) and the Party for a Strong Mauritania.
