Egypt and Burundi have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and strengthening coordination on African Union (AU) priorities, following talks held in Cairo on Thursday, 18 December 2025.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, Édouard Bizimana, congratulating him on his appointment and underscoring Cairo’s intent to sustain close diplomatic engagement.
The discussions highlighted longstanding ties between the two countries, with particular emphasis on Egyptian companies’ role in Burundi’s infrastructure and construction sectors. Water security featured prominently, with Abdelatty calling for cooperation and consensus among Nile Basin states, rejecting unilateral actions and supporting ongoing consultative processes under the Nile Basin Initiative to restore inclusivity and advance development projects in line with international law.
The Egyptian minister also expressed Egypt’s full support for Burundi’s forthcoming AU chairmanship next year, stressing the need for coordinated positions on continental issues, especially the gradual and inclusive reform of AU institutions.
Both sides exchanged views on regional peace and development, notably in the Great Lakes region, and agreed to maintain close coordination in regional and international forums to advance shared strategic interests.
