African Union : Morocco Elected to Peace § Security Council

Morocco was elected Wednesday to the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) for a two-year mandate at this decision-making body of the AU.

The Kingdom received more than two-thirds of the votes (34 votes) to gain a seat at the PSC. The election was held during the 48th ordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union which is convening in Addis Ababa.

The PSC is tasked with anticipating and preventing disputes and conflicts. Its missions also include undertaking peace-making and peace-building initiatives to resolve conflicts, authorizing the deployment of peace support missions, promoting peace, security and stability in Africa.

Morocco had served at PSC from 2018 to 2020 and from 2022 to 2025. During these two mandates, the Kingdom contributed to improving working methods and good practices in coordination with the other member states within the frame of an inclusive approach.

Morocco is taking part in the 48th ordinary session of the Executive Council of the AU with a delegation led by foreign minister Nasser Bourita.

On the sidelines of this African event, Bourita and and his Comorian peer Mbae Mohamed signed a visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and official passports of the two countries.

Bourita held talks with several other African Foreign Ministers, including his peers from Ethiopia, Togo, Mauritius, Mauritania, Somalia, Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.

The AU 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council is being held ahead of the 39th African Union Summit, scheduled this February 14–15.
