Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has raised alarms over the escalating situation in the West Bank during a phone call on Thursday, 11 December, with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. He highlighted rising Israeli military and settler violence, ongoing land confiscations, and the risk of wider regional tension. Since October 2023, Israeli operations have reportedly killed over 10.090 Palestinians, injured more than 11,000, and detained 21,000.
Abdelatty briefed the UN chief on Egypt’s efforts to consolidate the Gaza ceasefire, emphasising the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2803, which endorses the ceasefire and establishes governance and reconstruction mechanisms for Gaza. He called for the formation of a Palestinian technocratic committee to support post-war reconstruction and for unhindered humanitarian aid.
The minister reiterated Egypt’s rejection of displacement policies or any changes to Gaza’s geographic and demographic character. He also welcomed the UN General Assembly’s renewal of the UNRWA mandate for three years, underscoring its vital role for Palestinian refugees. Egypt remains committed to regional and international coordination to uphold Palestinian self-determination and the prospect of an independent state.
