Senegal-Mauritania: GTA project completed at 97%; BP advances gas production efforts
The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas production project, spanning Senegalese and Mauritanian waters, has reached 97% completion as of September 2024, according to British Petroleum (BP) and its partners. This update was shared during the inauguration of solar-powered cold storage containers and an information center in Saint-Louis, Senegal, on December 17.
In a joint press release, BP, the project operator, along with partners Kosmos Energy, Petrosen, and SMH, confirmed that Phase 1 of the GTA project is nearing full completion. “Teams are working diligently to integrate and commission all components of this megaproject to ensure it is ready for gas production,” the statement highlighted.
The recently inaugurated solar-powered cold storage facility is a collaboration between BP, Kosmos Energy, Petrosen, the municipality of Saint-Louis, and representatives of the Guet Ndar and Goxu Mbath fishing communities. The initiative aims to support local fishermen, enhance the fishing industry’s efficiency, and stimulate economic development in the region.
Additionally, an information center has been established in Saint-Louis to engage with the local community. Staffed by a BP team available daily, the center provides updates on the project’s progress, details about local content initiatives, and answers to residents’ questions.
Massaer Cissé, BP Senegal’s Vice President and General Manager, led the inauguration activities, underscoring BP’s commitment to sustainable development in partnership with local communities.
The GTA project is a significant venture in the region, with BP holding a 61% stake. It represents a strategic milestone in gas production for Senegal and Mauritania, leveraging local partnerships and international expertise to advance energy infrastructure while fostering regional economic growth.
