Casablanca generates third of Morocco’s GDP

Morocco’s industrial and financial hub, Casablanca region, has generated a third of Morocco’s GDP or 32.2% in 2022, followed by Tangier and Rabat, indicating acute disparities in national wealth creation, Morocco’s high commission for planning HCP said.

The growing industrial and tourist hub of Tangier generated 15.9%, while the capital Rabat and its region accounted for 10.5% of Morocco’s GDP, HCP said in a new report.

Five regions: Marrakech-Safi, Souss-Massa, Beni Mellal-Khenifra and the Orienta, altogether generated 33.5% of Morocco’s GDP.

While their contribution to national GDP was limited to 7.7%, the southern provinces reported the highest GDP per capita.

The southern region had a 84,069 dirhams GDP per capita, followed by Laayoune-Sakia Al Hamra with 66,241.

The Casablanca region also had a GDP per capita of 54,948 that is higher than the national average of 35,104. In contrast, Marrakech-Safi and Draa Tafilalet had a GDP per capita below the national average at less than 22,500.
