Morocco launches 14th wind Farm to fast-track green energy transition
Morocco has commissioned its 14th national wind Farm in the southern city of Boujdour that is expected to produce 300MW as part of efforts to accelerate the country’s transition into green energy.
The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), Morocco’s utility company, unveiled the project at the same time as it activated the largest Boujdour II transformation station, operating at a capacity of 400/225 thousand Volts.
The company in a statement said that the new project is a testament to the dedicated collaboration with partners in promoting sustainable energy practices, and positioning Morocco as an international leader in the fight against climate change.
The 300 MW Boujdour wind Farm came into being thanks to a substantial investment of approximately MAD 3.9 billion ($402.9 million). The plant will produce over 1,590 gigawatts per hour (GWh) of clean energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1,145,000 tCO2/year.
The electricity generated will be supplied by Boujdour Wind Farm II to ONEE under a Power Purchase Agreement at one of the world’s lowest tariffs. The Kingdom’s southern provinces are now home to 8 wind energy projects. Morocco envisions producing 850 MegaWatt (MW) as part of its Integrated Wind Program, in line with the national energy transition blueprint.
