Cairo to host 12th World Urban Forum next year

Egyptian capital Cairo will host in November 2024 the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF), the world’s largest event to address urban development challenges.

The event hosting-related agreement was signed by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, WUF said in a statement.

“We are proud to be hosting the twelfth session of the World Urban Forum in Cairo in 2024. This is a significant milestone in our partnership with UN-Habitat. We are eager to use this event as a platform to engage in global discussions around urbanization and learn from other countries and stakeholders, and continue to build sustainable and resilient cities for future generations,” Madboulay was quoted in the statement as saying.

Cairo was chosen in 2022 to host WUF12. The World Urban Forum (WUF) was established in 2001 by the United Nations to address one of the most pressing issues facing the world: rapid urbanization and its impact on people, cities, economies, climate change and policies.

Held every two years, the session is designed as a high-level, open and inclusive platform for addressing the challenges of sustainable urbanization. With the event hosted by Cairo, the forum returns to the African continent in over 20 years and it is the first time WUF will be held in a megacity of more than 20 million inhabitants.
