Three regions dominate Morocco’s GDP with 60%

The regions of Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier have created 60% of Morocco’s GDP in 2020, with five other regions contributing by 33%, the high commission for planning said.

Morocco’s GDP dropped to $115 billion in 2020 under the double impact of the pandemic and drought.

The three leading economic regions are also demographically dense compared to the rest of the 12 Moroccan regions.

Casablanca by itself created 32.2% of Morocco’s overall wealth in 2020, followed by Rabat with 16% and Tangier with 11%.

Following come Marrakech-Safi with 7.9%, Fez Meknes with 7.7%, Souss Massa with 6.5%, Beni Mellal Khenifra with 5.4% and the Oriental region with 5.2%.

Less populated regions of Draa Tafilalet and the three southern regions accounted for 8.1% of Morocco’s GDP.

The Moroccan government has recently adopted an investment charter and submitted it for parliament’s approval. The charter aims at enhancing the country’s attractiveness to private investors and reducing disparities between regions.

Morocco’s economic growth is expected to slow 1.5% this year after 7.9% in 2021, according to the government which also expects growth to improve to 4.5% next year.
