Sahara: Italy Renews Its Support to Morocco’s “Serious & Credible” Efforts for Peaceful Settlement

Italy’s foreign minister Luigi Di Maio has reiterated his country’s strong backing to “the serious and credible” efforts made by Morocco within the framework of the UN for a peaceful resolution of the Sahara regional conflict.

In a joint statement issued following telephone conversation held Tuesday with Moroccan peer Nasser Bourita, Mr. Luigi urged all parties to the Sahara conflict to show spirit of realism and compromise for a lasting settlement of this issue.

The Italian FM recalled his country’s position on the Sahara, expressed in the Declaration on the Multidimensional Strategic Partnership, signed on Nov. 1, 2019 in Rabat, reaffirming firm support to the UN Chief efforts and UN-led political process in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2602 adopted on Oct.29, 2021.

The two ministers agreed to speed up implementation of the multidimensional strategic partnership existing between the two countries and stressed the need to maintain and strengthen the legal framework binding Morocco to the European Union.

They also discussed the EU-Morocco fisheries & farming agreements, regional and international issues of common interest, including the latest developments in Libya.
