Jeune Afrique: American recognition of Moroccanness of Sahara, a slap in the face to Algerian regime
The recognition by the United States of Morocco’s full sovereignty over its entire Sahara territory dealt a hard blow to the Algerian regime, writes French language magazine “Jeune Afrique”.
In a story published Tuesday, the pan-African weekly says the Algerian rulers know well that they suffered a serious political & diplomatic setback with the historical decision made by former U.S. President Donald, a watershed decision that was supported by his successor, President Joe Biden.
For Moroccan diplomacy, the American decision has opened the door to several other countries from Europe including Poland, France and perhaps Spain to follow suit or at least prop up Morocco’s position at the United Nations, says Jeune Afrique.
The Paris-based magazine also cites the appointment by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres of experienced Russian diplomat Alexander Ivanko as his new Special Representative for the Sahara and Head of the MINURSO.
