Former Mauritania leader asked to appear in parliament over allegations of state assets misappropriation
A commission in the Mauritanian parliament investigating the country’s management over the past 10 years has requested former President Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz to show in the legislature in view of providing insights over some allegations of state assets embezzlement, Le360.ma reports.
Seven misappropriation charges spanning several sectors including sale of state properties in capital Nouakchott, energy and equipment are being leveled against the former President during his tenure in office from 2008 to 2019.
It is unlikely that the former leader will grace the invitation.
Tensions have risen between Ould Abdelazzi and incumbent President Mohamed Ould Ghazouan, his former protégé.
Ghazouan after assuming office last year launched a probe into the North African country’s management over the past ten years prior to his ascension to power.
Aside from Ould Abdelaziz, the commission wants to hear Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf who was country’s Prime Minister between 2008 and 2014.
It also heard former Premier Yahya Ould Hademine between August 2014 and October 2018.
